nearness
when the kids were all eager hands and eyes
there were four songs before we could eat
it was tradition

inside the little green
Christmas tree-shaped holder
the first candle already down to a nub
a clamber ensued
whose turn to blow them out
the fourth candle meant nearness
as we sang our songs with
bow tied hearts
