Roger and Bambi

dog and boy exist in syzygy
aligned in spirits that gravity
like moon and earth
in constant tug and push
wax and wane

tides of love come in go out
so clasp your leash to this collar
and go gadding through ditches of thin spring ice together
undistracted by squirrels’ silly chirps tree to tree
chilling rubber boots and stinking fur
with brisk bracing water

for this is no quiz or test
no right or wrong
no A or F
just growing blonde boy and eager shepherd dog
in the dark abyss
where
if you close your eyes
the phosphenes can set you on your way to see

the promise that exudes
from two lives leaning together

goodbye Henry

on the day
we put him in the crate and
drove to the pet vet meowing

in the room
three fake candles on the table
and a small blanket

while we waited I scratched his neck
hand lost in the soft fur

on the blanket he went to sleep
another needle made his heart stop
my hand still lost

I said goodbye
and left the room
sadness surrounding like
meows

a cat still

this cat
    so still stares
out through window
at cold stillness outside

does he like what he sees
in that white world

so few birds
a sometimes truck
drives past

and yet still he
watches
as if everything depended
on his being sentinel

as if the world’s heart
couldn’t beat without
his watchful eye

until that
still
    small
        voice
speaks to him &

he stands
    stretches
        & moves
to another post in his still domain

boy and dog

long happy tongue reaches face
blonde summer curls cradle cringing smile
eyes confident in this affection

this love
not easily deterred
pressing forward
opening heart
getting full attention
lungs full of safe air
lucky air of inseparability

cat nap

my cat
like a flute cadence

reposes on navy loveseat
soft paws extended under resting face
striped tail encircling hind legs
eyes pinched closed rhythmic breaths
with a barely heard purr
from deep within

he plumbs the peace of
the perfect end of a classical phrase

an orange sled

an orange sled
    a bumpy ride

a playful pup
    with wagging tail

a snowy bank
    a happy scream

a run uphill
    a helpful oma

a boy who’s five
    or almost there

a hood and scarf
    a darking sky

five more times
    one last slide

time to go
    the puppy’s done

new year

I shall ring
wing
sing
in the year

with Mahler’s 4th jingling room
littered with Christmas detritus
cards chocolates gifts candles

and music crescendos
into ominous chords
jingling in minor key

but movement ends
in stately hope
strong melody flinging in face
of audacious odds

and I think of a puppy
finding his feet in new snow
chasing a small boy on forest path
collar tinging “hello ‘21”

black cat

crosses          my          path
every    single    day

silent feet on sinewy legs
ready to leap

negative space with
spring green eyes

I’d take a picture but my phone fails
nothing but black

alive in this presence
or absence

for with snow falling soundless
on white winter world

little inky prowl fills
a              furtive                  need

three cats

twelve paws
sixty claws
many
many meows
in a day of coming and going
in and out

two black brothers
Bilbo and Buxy
trouble in twos
and Henry the tabby
learning to be friends
in this modest home of
lived-in lustre

at least the fur is soft

winter again

snow and hoar frost branched
and kitty shaking his paws
before going out

Roger and Henry

it’s more like a yodel
his meow I mean

as he climbs up stairs
or wobbles on bare feet towards the bush
or searches out the window
looking for

our cat
soft-footed gliding
tail swaying elegant as a ball gown
seamless as a Renaissance mass

boy
pure beautiful curiosity
approaches fur
hand outstretched
makes contact with
other magical life
whiskers and all

Christmas Eve 2016

there’s a storm coming
I tell the cat who lies un-
caring at my feet

11:00 am Christmas Eve

Henry the cat stretches out
as usual
like this is any other day
on the back of blue leather couch
like a vacationer on the sand in Mexico

eyes closed
paw tucked under chin
this nap is
complete
fully relaxed
devoid of stress or worry
he floats on an ocean of dreams
which occasionally lead to a
s t r e t c h
paws splayed

and then back
to another version of slumber

outside blue sky
and the chill of winter glints snow
and we stretch our souls
for a few more hours
resting in the warmth of this approaching love

overnight snowfall

weary world wears mask of snow this morning
covering
lawn
road
driveway
with pure white harpsichord
ringing in this mid-December
pregnancy
and open the door for the
cat
who lightly pads
leaving paw prints
as temporary evidence
of living in this masque

a cat at Christmas

a cat at Christmas knows its place
first outside
then inside
then outside
then curled up by the tree
in the glow of candles and coloured lights
presents opened and unopened
surround

he doesn’t need a gift
carols from the speaker don’t bother him
as he sleeps
his dreams not of sleighs or St. Nick
but when bells ring he wakes and stretches
and moves to his perch on the couch
observing the drama unravel
like yarn that gets caught in our hands and feet
winding around our hearts
in the annual pageant of love
green eyes closing for another

curled-up nap

Cleo Poem #7

curled up on rocker
a presence of soft
you stay there hours and hours
spending your day being cat getting older

you used to play with rubber mouse
or pen on the floor
now you pass them by
occasionally mustering energy for a leap or a scamper

but your Egyptian reality
focuses our souls
mature
magnificent
mysterious

upright alert head
of cat at window eyeing
bright new snow cover

new cat

play
pounce
leap

scamper
chase your tail
paw the pencil
------under piano

rub against leg
purr for a hand
stretch out and sleep

where did you come from?
waiting at our door in snowy starvation
thinking: here’s a home for me

now here
playing hunter
in our hardwood/carpet forest

we watch and smile
at life so sung

cold winter morning

our new cat skittles around the house attacking or running from
ghosts as I walk around determinedly in my housecoat lifting small
barbells to get back some of my strength outside the cold crackles
looking harmless and peaceful in the winter sun as it glints the white
white snow my hands cold as I write this the furnace still chugging
mightily to warm the house after a cold night renaissance music
pours gently out of the speaker like pure golden honey soothing a
restless mind and I notice the other speaker is silent so I move the
couch to discover the wire disconnected probably because of our new cat
well at least there’s something practical to do besides curing writer’s block
