fall prairie wind

constant tug at steering wheel
gusting surprises

flags stiff
------ends fraying
trees bend like archer’s bow
leaves let go
sailing forcefully across littered lawn
weeds in ditches undulate
like ocean waves
chaff from fields
dusts the air with
harvest
and the
unwavering white noise
fills ears

scientists explain
---------low pressure meets high pressure
old religions talked of
---------the breath of god
but prairie people just
count on the
constancy
the tug towards
